Today’s word is: leverage – Would you like to know what it means? It means: to gain maximum advantage using something that we have; to use borrowed capital for investment in a business; to exert force using the lever, use something to maximum advantage.

The word leverage means to gain maximum advantage using something that we have. In business matters, it refers to borrowed funds as capital. For example, we can say that the farmer leveraged the fertile land to get a high yield of the crop. Or we may say that the businessmen decide to expand his business through leverage.

Example number 2 of 8: AXP Pharma signed a long term contract with an American pharmaceutical company. Therefore, there was an urgent need to expand production capacity. The board of directors then passed a resolution to leverage Ten crore rupees for a modern plant and machinery.

Example number 3 of 8: A naturally formed giant rock was an obstacle in the development of highway expansion. The villagers were against cutting the rock. Hence, the contractor arranged a special machine called JCB to leverage the rock away from the site.

Example number 4 of 8: Dorothy was told that she had a voice which was most suitable for commercial advertisements. She attended a course in voice culture and leveraged her natural voice to be a successful voice-over artist.

Example number 5 of 8: Mr. Gupte, an assistant police commissioner was given the charge of controlling the smuggling activities at the coastlines. He decided to leverage his base of informers and control these illegal activities.

Example number 6 of 8: Africa has many areas that are economically backward and the children are in desperate need of education. Since there is a shortage of teachers, technology should be leveraged to spread the reach of education.

Example number 7 of 8: Mr. Girish approached a bank for a loan to buy a property for a new showroom. The bank scrutinized his company balance sheet and rejected the application because his company already had taken a high amount of leverage.

Example number 8 of 8: Prasanna scored three successive centuries in three innings. This escalated his popularity to an all-time high. He leveraged this to sign a high-value promotional deal with a sportswear company.
